A means to an end

something that you are not interested in but that you do because it will help you to achieve something else (not used with the ) 

Mike doesn't have any professional ambitions. For him, work is just a means to an end

A means to an end :  medio para lograr/alcanzar un fin

Ejemplos:

Es un medio para un fin y ese fin debe ser el desarrollo sostenible. (" It is a means to an end. That end must be sustainable development.")

No es el final.Es meramente un medio para alcanzar un fin ("is not the end. It is merely a means to an end")
