"JUST THE TICKET"



You can say something is just the ticket if it's the perfect thing or if it's exactly what's needed.

Example: That's just the ticket! Edna loves brooches, especially if they have bird designs, so she'll absolutely love this one.

"AN ACID TEST"


An acid test is something that shows the true worth or value of something or someone.

Example: Our new player has been doing well at training and in practice matches, but the acid test will come in her first real match.

Prueba de fuego.

Example sentences:

  • The new political party is doing better and better in the polls, but the acid test will be the next election / El nuevo partido político se está haciendo mejor y mejor en las encuestas, pero la prueba de fuego será en la próxima elección.

  • The real acid test for the new drug will come when it's tested on human beings / La verdadera prueba de fuego para el nuevo fármaco vendrá cuendo esté probándola en seres humanos.

If you have a night on the town, or go out on the town, you go out for dinner and then go to a show or a dance club or some other entertainment venue. 

Example: It's quite common for businessmen to take their colleagues out on the town

"UP A BLIND ALLEY"



Going down a course of action that leads to a bad outcome.

Example: I have been trying to find out something about my ancestors, but I'm up a blind alley. I can't find anything.

Example sentences:

  • The police are up a blind alley in their investigation of the crime / La policía está en un callejón sin salida en su investigación del crimen.
