TODAY'S IDIOM: PICK UP THE TAB / PICK UP THE BILL

"PICK UP THE TAB / PICK UP THE BILL"

If you pick up the tab, or pick up the bill, you pay for yourself and your friends in a restaurant or a bar.

Example: When people go out to celebrate a birthday in Thailand, whoever's having the birthday picks up the tab.

Pagar la cuenta.

Example sentences:

  • Larry is a very generous guy and he always picks up the tab / Larry es un chico muy generoso y siempre paga la cuenta.

  • In general in Asia, the person with the highest status picks up the bill in a restaurant / En general en Asia, la persona quien tenga el estado más alto paga la cuenta en un restaurante.

Additional examples:

  • When we go out for dinner it's always Jack who picks up the bill.

  • It's the taxpayer who picks up the tab for all these crazy government schemes.
